Origin Approach Now

From Nairobi
to the world

I'm Eric Averdung, a Kenyan photographer and filmmaker, driven by a passion for nature and conservation storytelling. Growing up in Nairobi, my love for wildlife sparked my interest in visual storytelling.

This passion led me to embark on a journey as a wildlife photographer, fulfilling my childhood dream while living and working in the Maasai Mara, while managing the Ishara Photo Studio.

"I have always been captivated by the journey to uncover the hidden layers within a story."

In 2024, I discovered the art of documentary filmmaking during the AFRISOS and Wilderness Project workshop in the Okavango Delta. Since then, I made my cinematic debut as the Assistant Director of Photography for "Ghost Elephants," a film by Werner Herzog shot in Angola and Namibia.

This film premiered at the Venice Film Festival before making its American debut at the Telluride Film Festival.

My Approach

I have always been captivated by the journey to uncover the hidden layers within a story, exploring depths that often go unnoticed, and crafting narratives that are rich with emotion. If a story lacks feeling, it will fail to resonate.

I dedicate time to truly understand my subjects, forming a genuine connection with the story before bringing it to life.

I continue to approach each project with the same childlike curiosity that I had in my youth. At its core, storytelling remains the tool that helps me grasp life's complexities and reveal the beauty and emotion woven throughout it all.

What I'm
doing now

With a strong interest in this field, I am actively exploring documentary filmmaking, using my experiences from various African countries to create impactful visuals that connect audiences with nature and wild spaces.

I am committed to honing my storytelling skills and creating a body of work that will resonate for generations.
